Power Generator Mechanic II

Performs functions required to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain all types of power generation systems, emergency power systems including transfer switches, uninterruptable power supplies, air compressors and pumps used within the confines of Fort Irwin. Supply customers with requirements concerning any technical information. Inspect and repair systems within technical guidelines as outlined under current publications under direction of the Supervisor. Works and maintains generators on post and at all range sites with generator requirements.



+ Must be able to safely and independently perform all the duties of a mechanic on industrial engines regardless of manufacturer, model (size).

+ Must be skilled in all aspects of troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance of industrial engines and related systems.

+ Must be proficient with a wide variety of test tools and calibration equipment.

+ Must have knowledge of the characteristics and usage of lubricants, coolants, and fuels.

+ Must be skilled in performance parts referencing.

+ Must be familiar with and have experience repairing all types of air compressors, pumps, and controls including troubleshooting, repair, and rebuilding of equipment following manufacturers' recommendations and manuals.

+ Must be familiar with and have experience in preventive maintenance of air compressors, pumps, motor drivers, and their associated controls.


+ Must possess knowledge in the generation of electricity.

+ Must be able to safely perform all phases of electrical power generation at Power Generator Mechanic I level.

+ Must be able to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain all types of power generation systems and emergency power systems including transfer switches and uninterruptable power supplies.

+ Must have a working knowledge of all types of excitation systems, voltage regulating systems, load pulsing, and compensation.

+ Must be able to read and interpret schematics and single line diagrams.

+ Must have experience with troubleshooting and repairing of electric motors.

+ Must have an overall knowledge of OHMS law.


+ Must have experience with troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance on all generator-related electronics.

+ Must have experience with electronic speed control systems and electronic governing systems.

+ Maintains systems where engine monitoring, safety shutdowns, injection, etc. are monitored with microprocessors and plc's.

+ Must have working knowledge calibrating and troubleshooting all electronic control systems, should also be familiar with transfer switch to generator telemetry and generator to engine telemetry.

+ Must be skilled in computer-controlled systems and their telemetry.

+ Must be familiar with and able to troubleshoot any major type of generator control.

+ Must have experience with load calculations and safe use of load banks for troubleshooting and calibration.

+ Participation in HDSS Mechanic Certification programs.

+ Participation in functional specific safety training that will permit working safely.

+ Ability to identify location of required parts and materials.

+ Knowledgeable in all standard operation procedures within the division.

+ Ability to perform low voltage electrical maintenance and repairs.

+ Computer skills including Windows as required to interface with generator engine and generator controls.

+ Housekeeping -- cleaning office and shop areas.

+ Perform duties in lower job classifications.
