**Job Summary**

This position contributes to the development and qualification of advanced lithium ion battery technology as a power source for portable consumer applications. The candidate will work closely with internal cross-functional teams to conduct cell diagnostic analysis, establish cell aging mechanism, and provide enhanced cell and materials design guidelines to extend battery life. In addition, the candidate will develop electrochemical models to explain and predict cell degradation, based on which guidance will be provided to internal cell engineering staff and external vendor base to optimize cell design, cell performance and, where applicable, cell production issues. This position will collaborate with pack engineering to develop and optimize battery management algorithms to extend the life of cells and batteries and to monitor battery state of health. 

**Key Qualifications**

* Requires 5+ years of hands on experience in battery diagnostics and cell and materials development including, cell failure analysis, electrochemical characterization, cell design, spectroscopic and analytic chemical characterization of materials, with emphasis on lithium-ion battery cells. 

* Strong understanding of cell designs and electrochemistry of lithium-ion cells

* Ability to interpret electrical signature of lithium-ion cells and derive its correlation with cell degradation phenomena

* Experience with current state of the art lithium-ion cell production processes

* Experience in design of experiments, validation testing, and data analysis

* Familiarity with electrochemical modeling of lithium-ion battery performance and degradation

* Familiarity with current state of the art analytic tools for cell failure materials degradation analysis

* Self-Starter and ability to motivate and work independently with minimal oversight required **Description**

Diagnostic and prognostic investigation and electrochemical modeling of aging and degradation behavior of lithium-ion cells using electrical testing and analytic tools such as TEM, XRD or XPS.

Identification of major contributors to cell degradation from cell design, process, chemistry aspects and impact of cell cycle protocol and device usage patterns.

Contribute to the establishment of battery specifications and battery health indicators and assist with establishing cell design details to meet application requirements

Act as technical contact point for electrochemical characterization and aging mechanism of batteries

Work with cell and battery engineering groups to apply battery degradation mechanisms to understand field data and to implement mitigation to extend battery life 

Plan and conduct investigations, prepare status reports related to cell degradation and aging issues, and contribute to resolving issues as required 

Working with external vendors and contractors to develop and qualify battery cell designs and advanced applicable technologies

Applying quality tools and their application to development, characterization and production of lithium batteries, including statistical analysis of performance results, process capabilities, and design of experiments ??


PhD in Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or relevant experience in lieu of.
